What is Flash?
Flash is a computer program used mainly for adding animation and interactivity to web pages on the internet. It is commonly used to create animation, advertisements, video and other web page components such as games.
It began life as simply a bit of software for creating animations to add to your website, but newer versions have a programming language built in (ActionScript) which allows the animation (or Flash movies as they are known) to react to what the user does with their mouse, for example a button would react to a click of the mouse, or a game could sense when your mouse pointer is being moved to the left and point the gun in a shooting gallery in the same direction, and count the number of duck being shot so you have a total when the time has counted down. Almost everything you see online that moves or includes some kind of animation is created using Flash.
Accessibility and Flash
It's important that everyone who visits a website displaying your ad is able to see it. To display things created in Flash (Flash Movies) on someone's computer they first need to install a small program called Flash Player. Flash Player is free to download and runs in the background allowing your files to play. The likelihood is that you already have Flash player installed on your computer even if you don't know it!
A recent survey revealed that 96% of all computer have it installed, and as of this year every new computer with Windows installed on it will also come with Flash Player.
Imagine your computer being a television and Flash Player being a digital set top box. With your television you can watch the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 but to be able to see the other 100 channels, you also need a digibox in addition to your television. Almost everyone can now get digital television, but not quite everyone. It's the same with Flash. Everyone can see standard websites, and almost everyone can see Flash, but in this case the digibox (or Flash player) is free and only takes a couple of seconds to download and install.
Most websites that will display your advert will also provide an alternative to your advert for those people who are visiting their site without Flash Player, so that EVERYONE is able to see your ad. This takes the form of a static graphic similar to one of the frames of your Flash advert. If this is something that the website requires, we will provide this free of charge.
