How can I best use the web to the advantage of my business?

The web - what is it and how do I access it?

The World Wide Web or 'Web' for short is a network of web pages that can be accessed via a huge network of computers known as 'The Internet' (note the difference - the two work together to allow people to access online resources, but are not the same thing!). The internet allows computers to connect with each other and display content from one (a server) on your connected device.

'The Web' was born in the mid-1980s, the brainchild of Tim Berners-Lee, a physicist then working for Cern, and was conceived as a way of sharing resources remotely via hyperlinked documents. It was launched to the public in 1991 along with the first 'browser', a program that interprets web code and presents it in a user-friendly way, allowing anyone to access any of the documents linked via 'The Web'.

To access the web and all of its bounty, you need a device capable of running a browser, a browser itself, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Safari and an internet connection. To view a website page, someone with all of the above needs to open their browser and type in the 'domain name' or URL (uniform resource locator) into the 'address bar' to go directly to that website, or if they don't know the URL, or to browse a number of websites relating to what they're looking for, they would navigate to a 'Search Engine', Google or Bing for example.

Search engines are programs that continually index what's available on the web, using small programs knows as 'spiders' or 'robots' to scour the web for any files they can find, reporting back on their content and other information contained in those files (webpages, images & other documents) and the search engine then records that information and uses it to categorise websites, ranking them on their relevance and quality in order to decide which sites to show you when you search for any given 'search term'.

Originally, webpages were limited in what they could do, and were simply a way of sharing information with limited interactivity - a far cry from today where they are fully immersive and an integral part of each of our lives, to the point where internet access is now considered a basic human right!

What does my business need to do in order to develop our own website and what will the process involve?

Every brilliantly successful website starts off with a brilliant idea. Whether your idea is to fill a gap in the market, a way for you to earn a living, whether it's to satisfy a great need, or whether it's a product, a service or some form of entertainment, the idea is the main reason that your website will succeed or die a slow painful death. You need passion, a great team, discipline, hard work, of course you need all the tools available to you that a website will afford you, but if your idea is a dud then if will ultimately all be for naught.

Once you've completed all your planning, you know what constitutes success and how you're going to measure it, you've done your market research and have the funding in place you can then think about how you're going to make the next step of anctually getting online. From a logistical perspective, to build, launch and maintain a website, you need a domain, ie www.something.com, space on a server which can be provided by a hosting company , you need your website files, and you need a program to allow you/us to transfer your files onto the server. and you need the files you create. Once they're up there then your site is live for ayone to enjoy.

How do I proactively promote my website online?

There are an ever increasing number of ways to promote your business online, some free and some have a cost, but when running a business it's important to explore every avenue. Methods of promoting your business for free include:

  • Website SEO Optimize your website so that it will readily be picked up by search Engines such as Google and Bing. This is by far the most effective way of promoting your business online, it is free and it has the largest reach...if done well!
  • Social Media Marketing Use your social channels and communities to push your business to your peers. You can include share and like buttons from most of the social media providers which removes any obstacles between a happy customer on your site and them recommending you to their peers. Many social media sites allow you to pull content from their sites and display said content on your site. This is a great way of keeping your customers abreast of updates in real-time, whilst also keeping your site content fresh.
  • Reciprocal links Get as many sites as you can to link to your site, this will not only drive traffic but it will also be recognized as a positive by search engines, boosting your ranking.

  • PPC (pay-per-click) advertising Create an ad that will appear at the top of a search engine results page or on an affiliates' website that you only pay for (a pre-agreed price) when a user is interested by your offering and clicks on your ad. No clicks, no cost.

A wide range of reporting tools available, allowing you to see how your email (and different parts of your email) has performed. Can contain dynamic content, can be fully automated and can feature triggered elements.

What about good web design and Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization, or SEO is the process whereby you make your site as finely tuned as possible in order to ensure that Search Engines such as Google and Bing consider your website worthy enough to show ahead of all the competition.

This involves writing the content in such a way that it relates to the words (keywords) your potential customers will be searching to find whatever it is you're doing/selling/saying. It also entails making sure that all the key elements of what makes up a good website are there and put together properly. Titles, images, framework of your site, links - they all have to be right.

This also includes things you can't see - the invisible tags that sit behind your webpage, but that do an important job nonetheless. A good web designer will do all of this as a matter of course, but there's always room for improvement, especially as time marches on, and best-practice and guidelines change and what used to be the done thing is now frowned upon.

I'm looking for web design - why should I invest in eCommerce?

In the United Kingdom, the eCommmerce sector is huge and growing relentlessly with growth of around 15% year-on-year. Online purchases have an average value of £78 in the UK, and over 76% of people who went online last year made some sort of purchase.

One of the most significant growth areas is eCommerce on a handheld, touchscreen devices such as a mobile phone or a tablet. Around a third of all purchases made in the UK last year were made on a mobile device, which means that if you are selling online, there is a 1 in 3 chance that if someone buys one of your products they are sitting in the park, or on the bus or waiting for their partner to get back to the car from an actual real-life shopping trip.

The advancement in technology of mobile devices and internet coverage is largely responsible for this, a significant factor being the number of eCommerce sites that are optimised for mobile and the size of mobile phone screens.
